Ok, ok, this is not what you would call a "Christmas" beer; but I thought I would try to sneak it in. I was hoping to do this for Hallowe'en but time constraints poo-pooed that idea. If you have read the blog you are quite aware that I do not like Pumpkin beers... they are seriously like opinions, everybody has one, and for the most part, none of them are right. Pumpkin beers are generally over spiced or sickly sweet and rarely... and I mean rarely does someone actually get one that is balanced and enjoyable. But I drank the Kool-aid and bought this one because I had never seen a pumpkin dunkel. This is one of the bottles I picked up when I went down to Oshawa/ Whitby and visited 5 Paddles and Brock Street Brewery. I have a few more in the pipe and a quick post about my visit to come.
Onto our beer...
Pours a hazy medium chestnut in colour with a light tan head made of small bubbles. aroma is sweet spicy hints of malt, alcohol is present on the nose. First sip is sweet roasted pumpkin with cinnamon plenty of cookie and molasses, hints of gingerbread and brown sugar. Aeration brings out more baking spices, pumpkin pie and some rye bread.
Impressions: Fail, So-so, Pass, Exceptional
Cost: 5/6 PASS
Colour: 5/6 PASS
Beer Style: 4/6 PASS
Re-Order: 3/6 SO-SO
Experience: 3/6 SO-SO
Christmas Cheer 3/6 SO-SO
Final Thoughts:
Yep... not a holiday beer. I thought Hallowe'en was a holiday, but it wasn't holiday enough. This is too sweet, too spicy, thin and boring. I really do need to enact a complete ban on pumpkin beers. Style wise it was good. I could taste the dunkel, but the beer would have been much better if the pumpkin was just left out. But try it if you can, you may like the pumpkin beers... I won't judge you.
