Another beer by Whitewater makes the list this year. This sweet milk stout is loaded with peanut butter extract and a hit of lactose to emulate a chocolaty peanut butter milkshake. Let's see how they did.

Onto our beer...

Pours a dark brown almost black with a tan head made up of small bubbles. The aroma is Frangelico or toasted hazelnuts, with some roasted peanuts in the background. The first sip is all peanut butter cookie. Peanut extract is used in this beer and it is quite evident, as the peanut taste is syrupy, sweet and almost chemical. Wheat and oat malts give the beer it's cookie flavour while some lactose adds in a creamy "milkshake" feel. Aeration ramps up the peanut extract and reminds me of Halloween candy kisses (Molasses caramels) that everyone leaves right till the end because you are afraid they are going to rip your teeth out.

Final Thoughts:

It needed a bit more creaminess, and I wish there was a way they could have accomplished the flavour without extracts, but this beer is good. Takes a bit of a hit on the re-order scale because of the extract, but I certainly wouldn't turn this beer down if it was free. How do you feel about extracts? Are they cheating? or are you fine with them? I just don't appreciate the chemical taste. Try one and see for yourself.

From and espresso latte Last night to a tea latte tonight. Beau's is the employee-owned co-operative brewery from near Ottawa in Ontario. They have paired with online tea retailer David's Tea. Brewed with lactose and vanilla and David's Tea Organic Cream of Earl Grey tea. this beer actually nails the taste of London Fog Latte.

Let's try it out...

Honey amber in colour with a fluffy, off-white head made of small bubbles. The aroma is malt, black tea, and scalded milk. The first sip is exactly what the beer advertises. a London Fog Latte. Scalded milk tea and vanilla dominate the attack. I am not getting much bergamot if any but the effect is stellar anyway. Very simple beer not much else going on but it is exactly what it says it is. Aeration spikes up the black tea and vanilla and allows a long drawn out cooked milk finish.

Final Thoughts:

As I said before, this beer is spot on when it comes to the drink it is trying to emulate. It's a very good beer and easy drinking. I enjoy Earl Grey Tea but I wouldn't think of having it added to beer. I'm glad Beau's did though. Check this one out while you can.

Another entry from Muskoka Brewery's Moonlight Kettle series, tonight's beer is a chocolate, coffee and lactose porter.  The effect is quite good, I had to remind myself I was drinking a beer and not a latte.

Onto our tasting...




Pours a dark chocolate brown with a milky tan head made up of small bubbles. Head is super creamy and is reminiscent of a latte. The aroma is bitter coffee and chocolate, with hints of grain and vanilla. The first sip is straight-up coffee and malt with a touch of lactose sweetness. The middle has a nice coffee hum and chocolate there is body from the cocoa butter and lactose. Aeration gives us some espresso bitterness and cocoa powder.

Impressions: Fail, So-so, Pass, Exceptional

Final Thoughts:

A great tasting beer and a nice approximation of a latte in stout form. Get one of these while you still can.

Another beer I brought home from my trip to South Western Ontario. Milkshake IPA (IPA's with the addition of lactose sugars) are gaining popularity with brewers. This is another offering from Cowbell's Renegade on-off series. Onto our beer.

Pours a cloudy lemonade-gold with a white head made up of small bubbles. Aroma is citrus and mango with underlying hints of toast and grain. First sip is a medley of sweet tropical fruit. Mango and pineapple dominate with other underlying hints of citrus. It takes until the second sip for the sweet lactose creaminess to kick in. Not overpowering but a second texture in the taste. Aeration spikes a malty grainy note with hints of spicy hops. Finish takes on a mango ice cream feeling and a lingering candy sweetness on the tongue.

Impressions: Fail, So-so, Pass, Exceptional

Final Thoughts:

Pretty good but not a stand out. I'm still on the fence because I have had maybe 3 Milkshake IPAs so far, So I'm mainly going on what I would like to see in one of these beers. Drinkable, and enjoyable, not memorable.
