Another beer I brought home from my trip to South Western Ontario. Milkshake IPA (IPA's with the addition of lactose sugars) are gaining popularity with brewers. This is another offering from Cowbell's Renegade on-off series. Onto our beer.

Pours a cloudy lemonade-gold with a white head made up of small bubbles. Aroma is citrus and mango with underlying hints of toast and grain. First sip is a medley of sweet tropical fruit. Mango and pineapple dominate with other underlying hints of citrus. It takes until the second sip for the sweet lactose creaminess to kick in. Not overpowering but a second texture in the taste. Aeration spikes a malty grainy note with hints of spicy hops. Finish takes on a mango ice cream feeling and a lingering candy sweetness on the tongue.

Final Thoughts:

Pretty good but not a stand out. I'm still on the fence because I have had maybe 3 Milkshake IPAs so far, So I'm mainly going on what I would like to see in one of these beers. Drinkable, and enjoyable, not memorable.

One of the bottles I brought back from my trip. Almanac was the Beer brewed on opening day, August 5 2017. A good standard barleywine.

Pours a cloudy dark maple syrup colour with a short off-tan head with tiny bubbles. Aroma is a demerara sugar nose with liquorice and molasses and spices. First sip is rich and smooth, quite sweet. Hints of maple syrup wood and dark caramel. Mouthfeel is light but with a good amount of stickiness. Good heat from the alcohol. Aeration brings out deeply toasted bread and dark caramels.

Final Thoughts:

Of all the Cowbell beers I have tried this is the best. A tasty beer and one that should be aged for a few years. Cowbell suggests that it can be aged as long as 10 years.

Southern Ontario Road Trip Day 1: It was Great When it all Began

Finally getting around to writing about my trip down into South Western Ontario. I used to live out that way prior to beginning the blog and well before the craft beer scene took over. While I would not be so grandiose as to call them "my old stomping grounds," I did enjoy living out that way, even for the short time I was there. If nothing else I just enjoyed travelling through the endless farmer's fields and dodging Mennonites on their buggies. I had pre-planned a few stops to try and maximise our trip, beer-wise. The Queen of Pint Jockey Headquarters graciously drove so I could sample. We started out a little late, I was hoping for lunch at our first stop but it became more of an early dinner.

Cowbell Brewing Company

Cowbell Brewing Company

More Cowbell!
The small town of Blyth, Ontario has long been famous for its eponymous theatre festival honouring the theatre of Southern Ontario and Canada. But as of 2017, it has also been home to Canada's first destination brewery, built specifically for tourism. Cowbell Brewing Company is also The world's first "Closed Loop" breweries where all wastewater is retrieved and recycled. It is also North America's first Carbon Neutral Brewery. I must say the building is beautiful, purpose-built to really drawn in a beer tourist. The building is built to emulate some of the more elaborate barns from the area, including some post and beam work in the main dining hall. Everything is open concept and from your seat in the restaurant, you are treated to views of the kitchen, the bar, and the brewery. The Queen had a falafel burger and I had a meat lovers pizza that was baked in the wood-fired pizza oven. The food was average, I'm not a food critic but I am a chef, and sadly I was not impressed. I wish I could say better things because I was looking forward to going to Cowbell. We need more places like Cowbell in Ontario to highlight the amazing craft industry we have. Onto the beer, more on my thoughts later.

Beer # 443: Gravel Run, Session IPA

Beer # 444: Lorna Bray Fly Girl, Nitro oatmeal stout
ABV: 5.1 %   IBU: 20

Black in colour with an off-tan head made up of super-fine nitrogen formed bubbles, mild cascade. The nose is coffee smoke and leather. First sip is dark roasted malt and oatmeal cookies, chocolate coffee and hints of almond. Sweet vanilla with hints of caramel, smooth and super creamy.

Final thoughts:

Cowbell is a beautiful person all dressed up and no-where to go. So much effort has been put into a forward-thinking, socially responsible, dynamic brewery destination; that somehow the beer and the food got lost along the way. Average is the best way I could describe it. Granted they have only been open for a year, and often I have tasted beer from a new brewery and not liked it, but then revisited them a few years later and they seem to have hit their stride. Please Cowbell, let this be the case. Perhaps in your growing pains, you will discover hidden gems and start producing beers worthy of your stellar home.

Half Hours on Earth Brewing Company

Next on our list was another brewery I was so very excited to visit as I have heard so many wonderful things about them. And honestly, you could not invent a better juxtaposition for Cowbell than Half Hours on Earth. Situated in an old defunct agricultural building on the (literal) wrong side of the tracks. (seriously the parking lot butts up against a disused rail line with a rusting grain car carelessly left behind. Unlike the pristine and carefully planned Cowbell, Half hours is an industrial, haphazard, dare I say afterthought of a tasting room. Down a quick flight of stairs, you are met with the tasting bar some folding picnic style tables merch, storage, barrels and a little bit of everything else needed to run a brewery. No branded glassware here. Plastic dixie cups with the initials of the beer you are tasting written on them. Somehow, this is much better. The hosts are easy going, chatty but not intrusive. There was no AC, so the doors were open leading to the only distraction in the place. A couple of flies that decided they wanted to lick beer off of the tables. It's a cow town... what are you going to do?

Tasting Room/Storage?

Check out the size of these Graduated Cylinders!

Half Hours on Earth takes their music as seriously as they do their beer. Pretty much everything is named after a song or song lyric. The brewery name comes from the band "Silver Jews'" song "Trains across the Sea."  -- half hours on Earth/ what are they worth/ I don't know.

Rad Flux

Beer # 445: Rad Flux Dry Hopped Sour Ale with Grapefruit
ABV: 4.0%    IBU: ?

Cloudy light blonde/beige with a sour citrus and bright floral nose. First sip is grapefruit, very juicy sour and clean. There is a hint of minerality or saltiness that makes it taste like a greyhound cocktail. Very drinkable.

Nothing but Flowers
Beer # 446: Nothing but Flowers, Sour ale with Flowers
ABV: 4.3%    IBU: ?

Salmon pink with a light pink head, first sip is very light fruity and floral. Chamomille and hibiscus with sour cherry and grassy notes.

Yalla Yalla Mosaic
Beer # 447: Yalla Yalla Mosaic, Dry Hopped Farmhouse Sour
ABV: 6.5%    IBU: ?

Very light blonde in colour with a fine beige head. Wheaty, biscuit, toast, banana, and clove. Hints of Sour tart candies, citrus and fresh green hops.

Control Bored
Beer # 448: Control Bored
ABV: 6.5%    IBU: ?

Beige in colour with a super-fine head. Chamomille tea on the nose. First sip is sweet chamomile tea with honey and lemon. Toasty biscuit and almonds with tones of cherry pie.

Final thoughts: Half Hours on Earth is awesome, well worth the drive. The beers are light and ethereal. It's no wonder why the brewery gets the attention it does. I only wish the beers were more available, but I guess that would take away from the uniqueness of them. They are, however, available from their online store in limited quantities.

More to come...

My Toronto Day Trip

Toronto Day Trip, A Play, and Ontario Craft Beer.

So, on the 9th of November, I managed to sneak down to Toronto with The Queen of Pint Jockey Headquarters, and we actually got to take in a play. Something neither of us has really done recently. We went to the Randolph Theatre in Mirvish Villiage and took in "EVIL DEAD, the Musical." No, we did not sit in the "Splatter Zone." A fact which we were kind of glad for because we had to drive back to Muskoka, and didn't necessarily need to mess up the seats in the car. For the uninitiated, EVIL DEAD's "Splatter Zone" is the very front section of the orchestra seats. If you sit there you are guaranteed to get COVERED in stage blood (And I mean COVERED). They hand out oversized T-shirts to minimised the clothing destruction, but stage blood is quite good at washing out. It's a combination of corn syrup and water-soluble dyes. Nevertheless, you leave a sticky mess. They don't even let you leave the theatre through the front, you have to go out the back across a walkway that has been carefully taped off with plastic. The play was incredible. Wonderfully funny and capped a great day. It runs in Toronto until November 19th, 2017, and there are a few tickets left. If you like the Evil Dead movies you will love the play.
Yes. That Says Blood Case 1 of 3 (Giant Steamer Trunk)

Before the play, we got to walk around a bit and hit a few places to taste some beer.

Harbord House

150 Harbord Street.

We started at the Harbord House for lunch it is a nice little Gastropub serving a good selection of Ontario Craft Beers and Ciders. I had the Burger and The Queen had the Vegetarian Sandwich, Both were quite good, but most sincerely, they had the best fries I had ever tasted. They were Yukon gold potato fries and were just delicious. A definite highlight of the meal.

Onto my beers.
Fresh Hop EPA

Beer # 379

County Durham Brewing Company
Fresh Hop EPA Cask Ale
4.5 abv

Clear to brilliant gold with a solid white head made of small bubbles. Aroma is bright and green with some medicinal hints and caramel malt. First sip is light and airy with fresh green hops, very English style light ale with the hops adding a nice fruity funk. aeration gives us some black tea and pear with hints of light citrus.

Henderson's Best
Beer # 380
Henderson Brewing Company
Henderson's Best Bitter Ale
5.5% ABV

Pours a light clear mahogany with a thin off-site head. aroma is slightly smoky and rich caramel. First sip is light chocolaty and fruity. a light effervescent. hints of caramel and malt with hints of coffee. aeration gives us some woodsy notes and mild hints of molasses.

Kensington Brewing Company

299 Augusta Avenue

Ever since they opened in the heart of my favourite community in Toronto, I have been keen to get down to the Kensington Brewing Company. Their new location is shiny and clean, mildly claustrophobic, and filled with good beer. Sitting at the tasting bar you almost have the fermentation tanks at your back.

Paired up with some impressive hand-blown glass light fixtures that look like over-inflated beer bottles. the place is very unique and a cosy spot to slip in for a flight.

Here is what I tried.

Gamelle Grisette
Beer # 381
Gamelle Grissete
4.6% ABV 15 IBU

Pale straw in colour with a thin white head slightly cloudy. Aroma is citrus and pepper with good wheat notes. First sip gives us banana and clove some medicinal hops with a hint of bitterness to clear the palate. Aeration gives us a zippy dingy tongue biting citrus with hints of green apple on the finish.

Beer # 382
Low Boy NE Pale Ale with Apricots
4.3% ABV 20 IBU

Cloudy off gold with no head. aroma is very fruity with strong hints of pine. First sip is TONS of grapefruit hints of pink pepper sweet and tart apricot fading into a green pine finish. aeration gives us some mild citrus pith with hints of zest and some woodsy notes.

Final Thought: I believe this was my favourite beer of the day.

Fall Saison w Pepper
Beer # 383
Fall Saison with Black Pepper
6.5% ABV 24 IBU

Slightly cloudy medium gold in colour with a thin skiff of an off-white head. aroma is wheat and banana. Hints of pepper and a touch of clove. First sip is warming and wheaty, with background notes of black pepper. aeration gives us the classic Belgian combo of banana and clove with a slightly toasty, baking spice finish.

Beer #384
Neu Rodes Dark Sour Cherry Flander's Red.
5.7% ABV 14 IBU

Red-brown in colour with barely a skiff of head. aroma is malty and sweet. First sip is very sour. fruity sweet and tart. tastes like unripe fruit. coffee and chocolate follow with hints of old smoke.

Final Thought: This one didn't sit well with me. I could not put my finger on why exactly, however, something in this beer did not appeal to me. Which is very odd as I am a huge sour cherry fan. Perhaps I have just not had enough Flander's Reds.

Beer # 385
Bonne Faim
Bonne Faim Strong Belgian with Hibiscus
8.0% ABV

Darker gold with a light off-white head aroma is wheat and some floral sweetness. First sip is quite sweet with hints of hibiscus and banana aeration brings out more sweetness almost syrupy.

Final Thought: This beer did not hit the mark with me either. A little too sweet and the hibiscus was too subtle. Not a bad beer by any means... just not for me.

A Crafty Lineup

Crafty Coyote
511 Bloor Street West

Last Stop before the show and some Fajitas to fill our bellies, oh.. And they had 30 taps to choose from. 20 Craft Beers and 10 Ciders. (should have taken a picture, bad Pint Jockey...)

These are my picks.

Blood Brothers
Shumei IPA
Beer # 386
Blood Brothers Brewing Shumei IPA
7.0 ABV 70 IBU

Pours a cloudy gold with a short off-white head made up of tiny bubbles. Aroma is citrus pineapple and light hints of pine. First sip is warming and tart with a slight sourness. Notes of pineapple cilantro
and parsley. Lips are left slightly sticky. Aeration gives us a very herbal finish.

Final Thought: Definite runner-up for the day, a great IPA.

St. Mary Axe
Canadian Best Bitter
Beer # 387
St Mary Axe Canadian Best Bitter
4.6 ABV 32 IBU

Pours a golden copper with an off-white head made up of tiny bubbles. aroma is caramel and fruit. First sip is malty, hoppy, smooth and creamy with lots of bubbly body.

Final Thought: I was excited this was a new brewery for me, I had not even heard of it yet. I really liked this beer and I can't wait to try more from these new brewers.

Beer # 388
High Park Brewing Company
Across the Pond
High Park Brewing Company Across the Pond ESB
5.5% ABV

Pours copper gold with a thin white head made up of tiny bubbles aroma is malty with hints of toast First sip is warm and creamy with fruit and nuts hints of bright green hops and mild bitterness.
and nuts.

Cowbell
McNall's Mission
Beer # 389
Cowbell Brewing McNall's Mission Brown Ale
4.8% ABV 20 IBU

Colour is light mahogany with an off-tan head. aroma is sweet with some light spice and lots of malt. First sip is quite sweet but not cloying hints of molasses and brown sugar touches of leather and old wood.

Final Thought: This is another brewery I am looking forward to go to, perhaps next summer.

Well, that was my road trip I hope you enjoyed my notes as much as I enjoyed tasting the beers. I hope to get down to Toronto again soon, there were so many more places I wanted to get to, but just didn't have time. Until then.

Cheers
