Visit to Herald Haus Brewing Company Stratford, Ontario October 15th 2019

The second brewery stop on our whirlwind visit to Stratford was the Herald Haus Brewing Company. It opened in 2018 on the Market Square in what was once the Stratford Herald Newspaper Building. The Herald Building as it was called was renovated and reopened as a brewery by Daniel J Graver. Their selection of beers are named to evoke the history of Stratford and area. We had a light meal before the show as you can see to the right, and below, charcuterie and some vegetable samosas. The cheese and meat were all produced locally as were the pickles. The charcuterie went well with the beer and the samosas were quite good. The dipping sauce for the samosas was terrible and did not compliment them at all.

Sadly I noticed a theme for the evening: lack of attention to detail. From confusion with their beers, to mismatched flavour in their food, to an unbalanced charcuterie board (pickle heavy, cheeses too similar in flavour profile and only one sauce, mustard, no chutney). Beer lines tasted like they needed cleaning (beers seemed flat with little to no head). Herald Haus was one of the breweries I was looking forward to trying and sadly they did not live up to my expectation.

Let's move on to my notes for the evening.

Onto our beer:

Beer # 492: SMS (Summer Music Saison)Saison 19
Style: Saison ABV: 5.5%  IBU: 35

Pours light gold with a short white head. Spicy on the nose with hints of wheat and citrus.slightly tart with hints of bitter green medicinal hops

Final Thoughts: Slightly confused here. At the brewery this was listed as SSM Saison 19 as you can see on the board, left, but on their website, it is The Summer Music Saison 19. Untappd just calls it the Saison 19. Whatever it is an underwhelming wheat-based saison with muted flavours.

Beer # 493: 21 Haze East Coast IPA
Style: NEIPA ABV: 6.8%  IBU: ?

Not very hazy clear gold short head. Aroma is tart fruit and pine. Very hoppy. With spice and bitterness. Sweet almost syrupy.

Final Thoughts: Ok this beer made me grumpy. Billed as an "East Coast IPA" which is just another term for NEIPA or New England IPA This beer is crystal clear despite the requirement of a NEIPA being "Hazy" it is an indication of the biotransformation that happens when the hops meet the various NEIPA strains of yeast. This is also responsible for the "juicy, "peachy," and "tropical" flavours of a true NEIPA. I first thought they had given me the wrong beer, but the flavour profile was close-ish so I just assume its a bad form of this beer. Pro-tip, if you are going to include "Haze" in the name of your beer... make sure it is hazy in the glass. Avoid.

Beer # 494: Perth County Conspiracy
Style: American IPA ABV: 5.0%  IBU: 60

Amber gold in colour with a thin head. Malt forward with spicy hops.some caramel and biscuit.

Final Thoughts: This beer is named after a local Stratford area acid-folk band by the same name ( I've linked some music of theirs below). Seemingly based off of a West Coast IPA with spicy malt-forward notes. Really unimpressive.

Beer # 495: G.T.R. Rusty Rail Red
Style: American Red Ale ABV: 4.3%  IBU: 26

Warm and malty with sweet hints of caramel and toast. Like a muscular Kilkenny. Nice Irish red style.

Final Thoughts: This beer was named after the Grand Trunk Railway which ran through Stratford. This is significant because Thomas Edison worked for the GTR as a telegraph operator as a teen. He ran away back to the States after he got called to the Head Office in Toronto to be fired for nearly causing a train wreck. This was hands down the best beer of the night but even here, confusion reigns. Listed as a 5.5% American Amber Ale on Untappd, The website lists it at a 4.3% English Style red. It drinks like a Kilkenny so I would call it an Irish Red and the alcohol feels closer to the 5.5% mark. Worth the visit at least.

Beer # 496: H2 Golden Ale
Style: Golden ale ABV: 4.7 %  IBU: 15

Gold in colour with very little head. Gateway beer... commercial golden style. Wet dog and mild hops, some malt, light rainwater.

Final Thoughts: Very commercial. Tastes like Labatt 50 or Molson Golden. Worst beer of the evening.

Overall Thoughts: Wow, I think this brewery needs time to grow up a bit. There is a lot of confusion with their styles and flavour profiles. A lot of the beer is just meh, or average at best. I would like to see them do better I will have to revisit them sometime in the future.

Music of The Perth County Conspiracy

First Album: The Perth County Conspiracy,
 Does Not Exist (1970)

Rare Self Pressed Album: Rumour (1973)

Beer # 360 Mellifera, Trou du Diable

Beer # 360: Mellifera

Trou du Diable

Shawinigan, Quebec Canada

Independent Microbrewery
Blonde Saison with Honey
ABV 5.0 %
Brown Glass Bottle 600 ml.
$5.80 (Canadian) At the LCBO

Twitter @TrouduDiable

Down to Trou du Diable again, I was good to see them at FUNKFEST This year, I hope they can make that a regular occurrence. In that vein, we have another Sour Saison from them. This time fermented with honey added into the wort. I have to say, I was really drawn in by the label. The artwork is a scream. I love the play on the traditional "Our Lady of X" with the Sugar skull masks. She is correctly called: Notre Dame Des Luchadores,' (Our Lady of Crazy Mexican Wrestlers). And it does belie the beer you find in the bottle... irreverent and heavenly.

Onto our Tasting...

Pours a slightly cloudy, dark honey-gold, with a massive light-tan honey coloured head made up small to large bubbles. Bubbles grow rapidly in size and then dissipate. Nose is decidedly spicy, with biscuity wheat notes, good hints of yeast and fruity, floral honey. The first sip gives us some cheek pricking Brettanomyces. The attack starts us off with very refreshing acidic tones that slowly morph through the wheat notes and balances the subtle sweetness of the honey. Fruity hints of Honeycrisp apple, orange, and lemon. Aeration gives us sour lemon zest, tongue biting prickles of acid, hints of clove and tasty bread.

 Impressions: Fail, So-so, Pass, Exceptional

Cost: 5/6 PASS

Colour: 5/6 PASS
Beer Style: 6/6 EXCEPTIONAL
Re-Order:  6/6  EXCEPTIONAL
Experience: 6/6 EXCEPTIONAL

Final Thoughts:

This is a fantastic sour. Easy drinking and refreshing. Great for the patio when it's sunny or inside when it's raining (more likely this year). Pick up one of Our Lady's if you can you will love it.

Cheers

Beer # 289 Saison du Japon Hitachino Nest

Beer # 289 Hitachino Nest Saison du Japon

Kiuchi Brewery

Kounoso Naka-Shi Ibaraki, Japan

Independent
Flavoured Saison
6.0 % ABV 16 IBU
Brown Glass Bottle 330 ml.
$4.30 (Canadian) At the LCBO

Twitter: @kiuchibrewery (Japanese)

Iching Papeda
Any time we can find a Japanese craft beer up in this area of Ontario I get rather excited. And This is one of the better ones to cross the pond. Hitachino Nest is the craft beer line that supplements Kiuchi Brewery's Sake business. Kuichi has been producing fine sakes sine 1823. In 1996 Japan passed a law that permitted microbreweies and Kuichi took that oppurtunity to expand into beer production.

Tonight's beer is a Saison, a light bodied ale, flavoured with the Asian fruit Yuzu. Yuzu comes from china and it is said to be a cross between a proto-citrus fruit called the Iching Papeda and a sour mandarin orange. Yuzu is a slightly tart fruit similar in taste to a grapefruit with major hints of lemon and orange. It is mainly used as a flavouring in Japan, rarely eaten as a fruit. You can find it in the citrus based soy sauce Ponzu, and it is often zested and used for garnishes.
Yuzu

Saison du Japon is a wheat and barley based beer that has been flavoured with yuzu and then given further complexity by adding Koji. Koji is a fermented rice base that is used to start the fermentation process in sake.

Onto the beer...Kanpi!

Pours a rich golden colour with a light off tan head made up of small bubbles. Nose is mineral, citrus, slightly soapy, mildy sweet with some caramel. First sip is tangy and tart, effervescent, somewhere between lemon and pomello. with hints of orange and grapefruit. Hints of wheat with some banana and clove. Aeration brights out some warmth slight hints of rice and sake.

Impressions: Fail, So-so, Pass, Exceptional

Cost: 5/6 PASS

Colour: 5/6 PASS
Beer Style: 5/6  PASS
Re-Order:  5/6  PASS

Final Thoughts:

Lovely, well put together beer, good complexity and a nice crisp clean taste. Certainly could enjoy a few of these. Get out and try one while it is still here.

Happy Halloween and Beer # 288

Steve from Minecraft
Well Halloween is drawing to a close the kids are on their way to bed and their candy is definitely in danger. But before I go and start thinning out the coffee crisps and rockets (so they don't eat too much junk...) I wanted to post a pumpkin beer for this special night. Halloween is one of my favourite holidays, it gives me an excuse to do some of the things I do best I.E.... eat too much candy and put strange things on my head. In fact most of my costumes revolve around putting something on my head and going from there. A few years ago I was Steve from Minecraft. Tonight I plonked a plastic Knight's helmet on my head that I found in the boy's bedroom.... and I thought... okay, we are doing this. and out the door I went helmet on head matching plastic sword and my pockets stuffed full of extra bags for my ... I mean... the boys' candy. Aside from that, Halloween is also the birthday of my Favourite Furball. Perriwinkle or "Perry" has been my constant writing companion and guest typo inserter in the blog since day one ( Perry, keyboards are not for kittens...) This year she turned 13 years old. And as you can see she is not opposed to putting strange things on her head either.
I thought there was one more coffee crisp in here...

So if you ever notice a typo on one of my posts keep in mind... it's probably because i was trying to type it with Perry in my lap and her tail up my nose or she decided to tap dance across the keyboard, yet again. I hope she will be here for many, many more typos. Happy Birthday Kitten.

I can't believe we ate the whole bag of candy...

Which brings us to tonight's beer. This time of year the shelves get flooded with pumpkin beers. Pumpkin porters, ales, what have you. This is the first time I've seen a sour saison, done with a pumpkin flavour. I've consciously avoided pumpkin beers for a year or two because I am very tired of them and after a while they end up just running together and tasting muddy.

So I was intrigued when I saw this can. and I have been liking what has been happening in the sour beer scene lately. What the hell, let's give this one a shot. So we threw on a copy of "Sleepy Hollow" and tasted the sour pumpkin.

Enter the great pumpkin...

Pours a dirty gold with a short white head made up of small bubbles. Nose is sweet filled with light hints of pumpkin and spices and just a touch of sour. First sip is a fruity with good hits of cinnamon and clove. Touches of ginger and allspice bring up the rear. Pumpkin is evident but not overpowering, or sickly like many other pumpkin beers. The beer is very light and well balanced between the sweet, sour and spice. Very easy drinking aeration brings out some caramel notes and hints of vanilla, and a little of the malt that hides so well in the background.

Impressions: Fail, So-so, Pass, Exceptional

Cost: 5/6 PASS

Colour: 5/6 PASS
Beer Style: 5/6  PASS
Re-Order:  5/6  PASS
Experience: 5/6 PASS

Final Thoughts:

Well quite frankly I am surprised. Not just a good pumpkin beer but one I would look forward to drinking again. Nothing is overpowering, or in your face about it. It is not just a mish-mash of over-sweet pumpkin and way too much baking spice. The sour counteracts the sweetness and the spice is balanced just right. You get a little malt at the end to remind you this is a beer and all is well. Get this one while you can. However, I imagine this one will make a return visit next year.... Hmmm, I wonder if it pairs well with stolen candy...

Happy Halloween &

Cheers

The 2-4 Beers of Christmas Day 3: Bush Pilot Pengo Pally

Beer # 251 Pengo Pally

Bush Pilot Brewing Company

Hastings County, Ontario, Canada

Contract Brewery
Flavoured Farm House Saison Ale 6.5% ABV
Brown Glass Bottle 750ml
$9.95(Canadian) At LCBO

Twitter: @BushPilotBeers

Tonight's offering from my tickle trunk of holiday treats, is a beer I have been very excited to try. Nomadic brewers, Bush Pilot Brewing Company, brewed this spiced Farmhouse with the aid of Nickel Brook Brewing Company and especially Brewmaster Ryan Morrow. Crowberries and Labarador Tea were harvested from Nunavik in Quebec, and then used to flavour this brew.

The name is of particular interest. Pengo Pally is the Inuktitut term for "I miss you." and it is this phrase that was painted on the plane of the first Inuvik Bush Pilot Johnny May. Johnny was the subject of a 2014 film called "The Wings of Johnny May" (Download here)
Born in Kangiqsualujjuaq on Ungava bay, a simple Inuvik boy decided to become a pilot at age six, a decision that lead to a life of adventure. He painted Pengo Pally on his plane to remind him of his wife who he often spent days and weeks away from flying all over the province. He spent years of his life ferrying people and supplies to the remote Inuktitut communities, including a small boy who was having heart failure. He and a nurse were flying the boy to a hospital when the nurse grew too tired to continually apply heart massage to keep the boy alive, Johnny asked her to prop the boy up against the co-pilot's seat and performed the heart massage himself... WHILE HE WAS STILL FLYING! He is a true Canadian Hero and worthy of a substantial brew in his honour.

Let's taste that now...

Pours a slightly cloudy off gold with a white head made up of small bubbles. Aroma is toasty, orange, citrus, green, herbal, and floral. First sip is toasty with biscuits and wheat. Some coriander, tea and citrus. Fruity, with some hints of licorice. Hints of menthol, The herbs numb the lips and tongue, but in the most pleasant ways. The medicinal herbs are offset by a bright hop flavours and toasty bread notes. Aeration gives us spikes of bitter herbs some more menthol and toasted wheat. Finish is a pleasant, clean, and bitter hum that slowly disperses into the background.

Christmas Cheer:  5/6 PASS

Final Thoughts:

Wow. A brilliant beer. Such a lovely balance of arctic herbs and toasty wheat.this is certainly one of the best Farmhouse Ales I've had this year. A little late in the year for it though... I would have preferred to sip this on a patio or maybe on the edge of a lake with a fishing rod in my hand... Well I guess there is always next year.

11.05 (2015) Imperial Saison Collaboration

Beer # 243 11.05 Imperial Saison
Collaboration with Sawdust City Brewing Company

Nickel Brook Brewing Company

Burlington, Ontario, Canada

Independent Microbrewery
Flavoured Imperial Saison  11.05 % ABV
Twitter: @NickelBrookBeer

Sawdust City Brewing Company
Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada
Independent Microbrewery
Brown Glass Half Growler 946 ml.
$10.00 (Canadian) At the The Brewery
Twitter @SawdustCityBeer

Remember, remember the fifth of November... Especially when it comes to this collaboration. Every year Sawdust City and Nickle Brook get together to brew a beer to celebrate one of their favourite subjects: themselves. The 11.05 (SUPER) high alcohol beer celebrates Sam Corbiel (the brewer at Sawdust) and Ryan Morrow's (the brewer at Nickle Brook) birthdays which both just happen to fall on November 5th. (Get it? 11/05?) Each brewery brews the beer in turn and this year the job fell to Nickel Brook who gave us an Imperial Saison lightly flavoured with citrus. (Last year's beer was a Triple IPA or IIIPA which was a mind numbingly, face meltingly delicious hop bomb and my post about it is here ).

The beer is available in bottles at Nickle Brook and on tap at Sawdust city and a few select bars in and around Ontario. I managed to grab a growler at Sawdust just to share with you guys!

Enough talk already... I have goosebumps let's try it out.

Pours a light and cloudy, amber gold. Head is quite thin and disperses quickly. The nose is quite hot with lots of grain sugars on the nose, some wood and caramel, a hint of citrus and some bright green hops. First sip is a zippy wheaty Belgian Golden pale ale with a lasting kick of alcohol. Citrus and hints of licorice spike through the middle. Slightly syrupy, leaves sticky lips. Alcohol is hot and heads straight for the brain. Slight malic acid, citric acid, and apple flavour. Aeration gives us some sour candy,  tangy, zippy pulse of alcohol with some light grains and herbal hops. Finish is not unlike sweet tarts candy.

Impressions: Fail, So-so, Pass, Exceptional

Cost: 5/6 PASS

Colour: 5/6 PASS
Beer Style: 6/6 EXCEPTIONAL
Re-Order:  5/6  PASS
Experience:  5/6 PASS

Final Thoughts:

Not quite as good as it's predecessor. This beer relies too heavily on added sugar to amp up the alcohol leaving a syrupy, sweet, candy dryness in the mouth. The lovely flavour of this beer gets washed out by the residual sweetness. A good beer though, glad it only comes out once a year... I need some water. Please celebrate 11/05 responsibly.

Cheers

Sun Comes up it's Tuesday Morning

A Range of Samples from Sawdust City and Lake of Bays

Twitter @SawdustCityBeer @LB_brewing

I've been on the mend lately. An early spring cold has put me out of commision for quite some time. That and I have been working some ridiculous hours. So I decided to hop into the local and do a bit of an omnibus tasting, as they had a few new ones I had not tried. Enjoy these and expect some new tastings shortly

Beer # 229 Cheli's Pale Ale

Lake of Bays Brewing Company
Baysville, Ontario, Canada

Independent Microbrewery
Dry Hopped Barrel Aged Pale Ale
7.0 % ABV 20 oz Draft (592 ml.)
$6.00 (Canadian) At the brewery

This is the newest beer in the NHL Alumni Series and it is named for Chris Chelios the 20 plus year, right handed defenceman who played for six years with The Montreal Canadiens and almost a decade each with the Chicago Black Hawks and Detroit Red Wings. This is the first Time I have seen the Alumni Series in draft form and was curious... If I get a bottle of this I will repost it in a more detailed form.

Pours a lovely clear gold with an off-white head made up of small bubbles. Nose is sweet and slightly woody, notes of malt and vanilla caramel. First sip is very refreshing clear and crisp. Very fresh tasting oak sets in later almost saplike but no too sweet. Good profile of an English pale ale with tons of fresh fruit some apples and a nice drying and slightly bitter finish. All through the beer you get a hazy woodiness, that is like a forest on a fall day or the distant smoke of a maple sugar shack.

Impressions: Fail, So-so, Pass, Exceptional

Cost: 5/6 PASS
Colour: 5/6 PASS
Beer Style: 6/6 EXCEPTIONAL
Re-Order:  5/6 PASS

Final Thoughts: Very good beer, sadly only a perfunctory look, would love to get this in a bottle and slowly savour it.

Beer # 230 So it Gose

Sawdust City Brewing Company
Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada

Independent Microbrewery
Flavoured Gose
4.1 % ABV 20 oz Draft (592 ml.)
$6.50 (Canadian) At the brewery

This new offering by Sawdust is a lacto-bacillus soured wheat beer, with sea salt and coriander

Pours a hazy tinny gold, with a thin off-white head made up of tiny bubbles. Mildly sour on the nose with hints of wheat, and an almost sea like brininess. First sip gives us a tart brew with salt tones. The salt is evident, you taste it but it does not leave you thirsty. There are hints of citrus, coriander. The salt amps up your taste-buds and leaves you wanting more. There is a subtle fruitiness mixed in with the overall minerality of the salt. The strangest thing about the beer is the three main components the salt, the fruit-herb and the wheat all play exceedingly well with each other. one will surge ahead while the others wait their turn creating a flavour palate that is intriguing and ever-changing

Impressions: Fail, So-so, Pass, Exceptional

Cost: 5/6 PASS
Colour: 5/6 PASS
Beer Style: 6/6 EXCEPTIONAL
Re-Order:  5/6 PASS
Experience:  6/6 EXCEPTIONAL

Final Thoughts: I was told this is the love it or hate it beer... I am obviously one of the former. This beer is an excellent example of Gose and how minerals can change the flavour of beer. The only other Gose I have blogged about was Beau's here and I can safely say this one is better. This is definitely not  some kid adding salt to his Canadian to make it taste less like skunk. This is a carefully crafted and balanced beer. Try it, you will be surprised.

Beer # 231 Original Jorden

Sawdust City Brewing Company
Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada

Independent Microbrewery
APA
5.0 % ABV 20 oz Draft (592 ml.)
$6.50 (Canadian) At the brewery

This one was brewed for the Griffin Gastropub in Bracebridge, Ontario.

Pours a cloudy green-yellow with an off-white head made of small bubbles. Very light grapefruit and passion fruit on the nose with hints of pine and some vegetation. First sip is very light and fruity with some underlying greenness. Some medicinal hops and pine. nice bitterness on the finish with plenty of grainy malt.

Cost: 5/6 PASS
Colour: 5/6 PASS
Beer Style: 5/6 PASS

Final Thoughts: Not the best APA I have ever had but a nice fruity patio sipper.

Beer # 232 Balmoral's Outrage Rye Saison

Sawdust City Brewing Company
Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada

Independent Microbrewery
Barrel Aged Flavoured Rye APA Saison
5.0 % ABV 20 oz Draft (592 ml.)
$6.50 (Canadian) At the brewery

The most interesting brew of the day was definitely this one. Balmoral's Outrage. I can't offer any opinion on the name... but the beer? Whoa!

Pours a coppery gold with an off-white head made up of small bubbles. Nose is woody with lots of medicinal herbaceousness. The beer is slightly tart with some oak and smoke. There is leather and cedar followed by a dried fruit sweetness, some spices, like ginger clove and curry. There is a definite turmeric and coriander, cumin, Indian sweet masala going on. This beer was described as "Christmas Cake" to me, and the dried fruit and spicy sweetness does back that up, but I get a nice fruity curry from this, a gentle Northern Indian curry with raisins and potatoes. The beer is infused with Juniper and Angelica root, which should give it a more gin-like or even a Drambuie feel, but I lean more towards the food. I would be thrilled to drink this with a nice spicy curry, (or for that matter bake it into a Christmas Cake.)

Impressions: Fail, So-so, Pass, Exceptional

Cost: 5/6 PASS
Colour: 5/6 PASS
Beer Style: 5/6 PASS
Re-Order:  6/6 EXCEPTIONAL
Experience:  6/6 EXCEPTIONAL

Final Thoughts: This beer is why the craft market is doing so well. It is not about Why?... it is about Why Not? This is a fantastically delicious beer that I am afraid not enough people will get to taste (or understand). Sometimes the ripest fruit is found far out on the limb...

Beer # 233 The Princess Wears Hotpants
  Sawdust City Brewing Company
Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada

Independent Microbrewery
Cask Conditioned
5.0 % ABV 20 oz Draft (592 ml.)
$6.50 (Canadian) At the brewery

Flavoured with some citric acid and jalapenos this beer is designed to spice up your life.

pours a cloudy off-gold with very thin off-white head. First sip is light an fruity with a follow-up attack of hot jalapenos. tangy and zingy, with a nice fruity hit of capsicum.

Impressions: Fail, So-so, Pass, Exceptional

Cost: 5/6 PASS
Colour: 5/6 PASS

Final Thoughts: not my favourite incarnation of the princess, but I like the heat. A nice tasty brew good for summer sipping, or spicy food. try some if you can find it... it pops up erratically.

Cheers
